When Round the Clock Care is Necessary

While there are clients who start out with standard, daily home care services and advance to more hours, others start immediately with 24 hour care. For example, a parent who managed fine with daytime visits might’ve started wandering at night. Or, a stroke might’ve left someone unable to reposition themselves in bed. If their spouse was handling caretaking before, they may not be able to safely lift or transfer their loved one anymore and are enduring sleepless nights of their own.

For bed-bound clients, they not only need supervision, but repositioning every couple of hours to prevent pressure sores, help with toileting and hygiene, meals brought to them and possibly fed to them. They also need someone to watch for small changes that could be symptoms of a bigger issue, and none of these needs “pause” at bedtime, so to speak.

A previous client of ours, Steve S., described our caregivers as “always there 24/7 when my mom needed some assistance or a warm hand to hold”. We believe both the physical assistance and the emotionalcompanionship are equally important when overnight hours are long and lonely for a senior who cannot get up on her own.

Two Types of 24 Hour Care

Visiting Angels offers two ways to schedule around the clock care, and which option usually depends on how much help your loved one needs overnight.

First, there is our Live-In Care option. Here, a caregiver will live in the residence with your loved one, and sleep when your loved one sleeps. This can be a good option for seniors who rest through the night most nights, but should not be left alone in the house. Our caregiver is there for the unexpected (like a fall on the way to the bathroom) and handles personal care needs, meals, medication reminders and housekeeping throughout the daytime hours.

Alternatively, you may choose 24 Hour Care Shifts in which one caregiver spends the day, then a different caregiver arrives for the night time shift. The caregiver on duty is always awake and alert for bed-bound clients who need repositioning or whose dementia has them awake or wandering in the wee hours of the morning.
