A caregiver working with a veteran does the same hands-on work as with any client. Getting dressed safely and moving around the house come first. Meals get prepped and medications get tracked on schedule. When driving is no longer safe, the caregiver takes over getting to appointments. What matters more here is independence. The Westchester Vet Center on Hamilton Avenue offers free, confidential counseling, separate from the VA's medical records, for veterans dealing with PTSD or other service-related stress. For benefits questions specifically, the Westchester County Veterans Service Agency downtown helps veterans and families sort out what they're actually eligible for, including the VA's Aid and Attendance benefit, which can help cover the cost of in-home care for veterans who need help with daily activities.
