Why Spending Time in Nature is Essential for Older Adults

Why Spending Time in Nature is Essential for Older Adults

June is National Great Outdoors Month. It reminds us to put down our phones, lace up our shoes, and head outside for some fresh air and sunshine.

Research shows that older adults who spend consistent time outdoors improve their health and well-being. Anywhere between 20 to 30 minutes, three days a week, is enough for older adults to see an improved mood and well-being. The best news is there’s no need to venture into the wilderness to receive the benefits the great outdoors has to offer. Sitting outside on the patio or backyard provides the same benefits as a long hike along a trail.

If you still need convincing, here are four reasons why spending time in nature is essential for older adults.

Boosts Vitamin D

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that all older adults need. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, which is necessary for building and maintaining strong bones. It also regulates the immune system and can help fight feelings of sadness or depression. The sun is one of the best sources of vitamin D. It takes approximately 15 minutes a day outdoors for your skin to receive enough vitamin D from the sun. Plan to spend 15 minutes in the sun, early in the day, when the sun’s rays aren’t as strong. Then, head inside to apply sunscreen before spending more time outdoors.

Decreases Blood Pressure

Another benefit to spending time outdoors is that it decreases blood pressure. Nature has a calming effect that instantly lowers blood pressure, heart rate, and the production of cortisol. It also reduces stress, which can affect blood pressure. Spending 20 minutes in nature can lower stress hormones, according to a study published by Frontiers in Psychology. Even just livingnear nature reduces the risk of high blood pressure. Improves Cognition

Older adults concerned about their cognition may be pleased to learn that spending time outside can help improve their memory. A study conducted by the UniversityofMichigan found that after an hour of interacting with nature, memory performance and attention span were improved by 20 percent. The effects of spending time in nature are similar to the effects of meditation.

Increases Feelings of Happiness

Finally, spending time in nature can increase feelings of happiness in older adults. According to one study, older adults who participated in nature-based activities improved their overall psychological health and reduced feelings of anxiety. Participants also experienced an improvement in sleep, which can affect mood and behavior. Older adults who are struggling with negative feelings, such as anger, fear, depression, or anxiety, may find that their mood improves after spending time outside.
