Stay Safe Outdoors with These Four Tips

Stay Safe Outdoors with These Four Tips

The summer season often means spending more time outdoors. Farmer’s markets, picnics, family reunions, trail hiking, swimming season, taking grandchildren to parks or zoos, and dining al fresco are just a few activities older adults participate in throughout the summer. Yet, as fun as this summer season can be, summer can be a dangerous season for some older adults.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, older adults are more at risk for heat-related health problems. Aging bodies don’t regulate temperatures as effectively as younger persons. Chronic medical conditions, and the medications taken to manage those conditions, can interfere with body temperature regulation and reduce sweat production. However, with a few precautions, older adults can safely enjoy the great outdoors. With summer on the horizon, here are four tips for older adults to ensure they stay safe outdoors.

Always Wear Sunscreen

Sunscreen isn’t just for kids at the pool or beach. Sunscreen is just as important for older adults, anytime they plan to spend long periods of time outdoors. Apply sunscreen whenever you plan to head outdoors. Apply early and often, as most sunscreens need time to absorb into the skin to be effective. To protect yourself from both UVA and UVB rays, look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen. Even if you’re only planning to be outside for a short amount of time, still apply sunscreen to your face, neck, and upper chest. For more sun protection, consider purchasing special clothing designed to reflect the sun’s rays. Always choose lightweight clothes made from breathable fabrics to avoid getting overheated outdoors.

Avoid the Peak Hours of the Day

The sun is most intense during the peak hours of the day, usually between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. As much as possible, avoid spending time outdoors during these hours. Take your grandchildren to the park or zoo earlier in the morning before temperatures begin to spike. Beat the heat of the day by going for a walk right after breakfast. If you’re not a morning person, plan your recreational outdoor activities for later in the afternoon or evening, once the peak hours of the day or past.

Actively Increase Hydration

Heat and humidity cause our bodies to sweat faster and more profusely. Older adults naturally have a lower volume of water in their bodies. They may also have conditions or take medications that increase the risk of dehydration. It’s essential that older adults actively increase their hydration during the summer season. Keep hydrated by drinking water first thing in the morning, with each meal, and before, during, and after active pursuits. Carry a water bottle with you outdoors to help you replenish water lost through sweat.

Allow Yourself to Slow Down

Finally, allow yourself to slow down when you’re outside on a hot day. Heat and humidity cause our bodies to run less efficiently. We were wired to naturally slow down in hot weather. Instead of fighting the urge to keep pushing, allow yourself to listen to your body and slow down. Slow down your walking pace or tackle one area of the garden for a few minutes. Stop if you at all feel dizzy light-headed, or tired. Alternate between outdoor and indoor activities. Stay indoors on days when the heat index is high.
