In-Home Care for Parkinson's Disease in Asheville, NC

If you have a loved one living with Parkinson's disease, you may know that unique considerations are often necessary to accommodate their care needs. At Visiting Angels of Asheville, North Carolina, we're proud to offer specialized in-home care services catered to Parkinson's patients. With the devotion and compassion of our expert caregivers, your family can enjoy the support they need and your loved one the quality of life they deserve.

What Is Parkinson's Disease?

Around 500,000 people currently live with Parkinson's disease in the United States, a disorder that affects the nervous system. It's a progressive condition, so symptoms start slowly and become gradually more severe over time. Experts recognize five stages of progression, each associated with a particular set of symptoms:

Stage 1

The first stage correlates with mild symptoms that don't interfere with daily activities. Your loved one may experience tremors and impaired movement on one side of the body, along with changes to their posture, facial expressions, and mobility.

Stage 2

Your loved one's tremors and movement symptoms may begin to affect both sides of the body, making daily activities more challenging. They might also experience muscle stiffness and their postural/mobility symptoms may become more apparent.

Stage 3

In this stage, balance issues often arise, motor symptoms tend to worsen, and daily activities may become restricted. Your loved one's overall impairment is considered mild to moderate at this point, but they're largely capable of living independently.

Stage 4

Movement symptoms have fully developed, and your loved one may exhibit decreased autonomic functions, such as an impaired ability to blink, changes in their emotions and speech, and challenges related to swallowing, chewing, and toileting. They may be capable of standing and walking on their own with the support of an assistive device, and they may need assistance with daily activities.

Stage 5

In the final stage, your loved one is likely to require around-the-clock care for their daily activities. Muscle stiffness may be advanced to the point where they'll need assistance standing or walking.

What Causes Parkinson's Disease?

Parkinson's disease arises when nerve cells in a region of the brain called the basal ganglia either die or become otherwise impaired, causing a decreased production of dopamine. The specific causes of onset are unclear, but they could be both genetic and environmental, and advanced age is a known risk factor. Because the basal ganglia and dopamine are both essential for movement, their impairment is responsible for many of the hallmark symptoms associated with Parkinson's.

What Specialized In-Home Care Services Are Available for Parkinson's Patients?

Because of the gradual loss of bodily functions caused by Parkinson's disease, your loved one may eventually require the services of a care provider to assist them with their daily activities. Professional assistance can reduce your loved one's risk of injury and exposure to other potential hazards while maximizing their comfort and prolonging their independence for as long as possible.

Customized Care Plans for Parkinson’s

The Visiting Angels approach to in-home care is fully personalized and customizable. With each of our clients, the relationship begins with a free phone consultation in which we learn about their needs, preferences, and living situation. This information allows us to craft a care plan that satisfies the individual's care requirements and works within your family's budget and schedule availability. You can add or remove services and visitation days to your liking so that your loved one has a knowledgeable and caring professional with them exactly when they need it.

We understand that care needs can change over time, especially with a progressive disorder such as Parkinson's disease, so you and your loved one are welcome to revise the care plan at any time. Just notify a Visiting Angels care coordinator and we'll adjust our services to best accommodate your needs.
