What Is Personal Care?

The most common type of private duty nursing is personal care. Typically, individuals with a chronic illness, physical disabilities, or difficulties with strength, coordination, or mobility request this service. Care includes more than one task or activity to ensure your loved one’s health and safety are being taken care of.

Assistance with Activities of Daily Living, also known as ADLs, is one of the most important and key pieces of private nursing care. ADLs can include dressing, personal grooming, bathing, and toileting. Our caregivers are trained and equipped with the skills they need to aid with these tasks, as well as to help with similar tasks like mobility and transfer assistance.

Our caregivers assist with other tasks your senior may need assistance with, including running errands, meal preparation, light housekeeping, medication reminders, and other routine activities. Senior isolation is a commonly feared risk for home bound seniors, but you don’t have to fear because while our caregivers are providing care, they are also providing companionship.

Personal Caregiving vs. Companion Caregiving

Once you have decided that private duty nursing is the best option for your situation, it is then time to choose which type of care is best for your loved one and their lifestyle. Most of the time families are unsure if they should choose personal care and companion care—two of the most common types of in home care.

The biggest difference between these types of care is the help with ADLs, and any other directly physical caregiving tasks. Personal caregivers have the specific skills that are used to provide direct physical assistance while also assisting with other caregiving duties. Companion caregivers however are not able to assist with physical tasks. These caregivers are provided to assist with activities such as errands or light housekeeping.

If your senior is needing direct physical assistance, we would recommend our personal care services. This type of care is also beneficial for those who are suffering from a chronic health condition, such as diabetes or dementia. If this does not sound like the care your senior is needs, we would then recommend companion care services.
