Benefits that Help Cover Home Care Services
If you or your spouse are veterans, your pension may help pay for at-home eldercare expenses. Eligible veterans may receive yearly assistance from the Aid and Attendance pension to help defray these expenses. Aid and Attendance is an increased monthly pension paid to qualified veterans, spouses, and surviving spouses.
The veterans' pension and survivors' pension benefit program can cover the following:
- Up to 60 hours each month for care for a qualified military veteran with a spouse
- Up to 50 hours each month for a single veteran
- Up to 30 hours each month for a surviving veteran's spouse
One of the following health conditions must be met to receive Aid and Attendance:
- The applicant requires help performing activities of daily living
- The applicant is bedridden
- The applicant is a patient in a nursing home
- The applicant's eyesight is limited to a correct 5/200 visual acuity or less in both eyes; or concentric contraction of the visual field to 5 degrees or less
