How to Enjoy Spring This Season

How to Enjoy Spring This Season

Spring is finally here, and if you’re accustomed to the Midwest weather, then you know how magical spring can be. After staying cooped up all winter, it’s time to get outside and enjoy the outdoors before the sweltering heat of summer passes through.

Explore your city

There are many fun things to do in Mentor and the surrounding communities. Grab a friend, family member, or caregiver and head to some of your city’s top attractions.

  • Visit the James A Garfield Historic Site - Home to the 20th president of the United States, the James A Garfield Historic Site is a fun and interactive educational experience. You can explore one of the first presidential libraries of the United States or attend an upcoming event hosted by the site’s staff.
  • Pedal boat on the Mentor Lagoons - If you’re looking for a fun way to fit physical activity into your spring, hop on a pedal boat and travel around the Mentor Lagoons. You can also rent kayaks, paddle boards, or canoes. Or, if you’re not one for water activities, enjoy exploring 450 acres of green space around the lagoons.
  • Enjoy a round of golf at the Black Brook Golf Course - The 18th hole was selected as one of News Channel 5’s Dream 18, the Plain Dealer’s Elite 18, and the course was voted one of the Best Places to Play by Golf Digest magazine. If you think your golf skills are top-notch, you can join one of their adult leagues.

Plant a garden

Planting a garden is a fun activity that will keep you busy throughout spring and summer. If you have the space outdoors, consider planting a few of your favorite fruits and vegetables, such as tomatoes, cucumbers, or strawberries, so you have fresh produce to enjoy.

Fruit and vegetable gardens take work, so if you’re looking for a low-maintenance garden, consider planting some flowers or aesthetic plants. Make sure you grow them according to the directions, as some plants may need more water and sun than others.

You can try an indoor herb garden if you don’t have space outdoors for produce or flowers. Herb gardens are small enough to fit on most windowsills and provide fresh spices and herbs all year!

Have a picnic

When the sun is shining, the wind is low, and the temperature feels just right, enjoy a meal outside for a springtime picnic. You can go for a traditional picnic with a blanket on the ground and homemade lunch. Or head to a nearby park and enjoy a takeout meal at a picnic table. You can also bring a small table and chair into your yard and enjoy your neighborhood while you have lunch.

Catch up with friends

It’s easy to hide indoors and avoid your loved ones during the cold Mentor winters. But now that the weather is warming up, call a friend, family member, or loved one and schedule a date to enjoy each other’s company. You can meet up for lunch, see a movie, visit a museum, or invite them over to help plant a garden. And if you don’t have loved ones who live nearby, plan a virtual date to chat on Facetime or Zoom.
