Walk to End Alzheimer’s at Holyoke Community College
On Sunday October 15th, Visiting Angels West Springfield participated in the Walk to End Alzheimer's event put on by the MA/NH Alzheimer's Association chapter, which was held at 10am at Holyoke Community College. Office staff members Bianca, Brianna, and Lauren walked over a mile around the campus, towing along Brianna’s dog, Katara.
According to Jim Wessler, CEO of the MA/NH Alzheimer's Association chapter, over 2,000 people attended to show support for this event that has been held in Western Massachusetts for over 20 years.
The Holyoke Walk to End event raised over $200,000 for the organization. Participants walked 1.5 miles around the HCC campus holding Promise Garden flowers in one of four colors, each representing a different connection to the disease: from not knowing anyone but wanting to support the cause, to being a caretaker for an individual who currently suffers from the disease.
The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is a nationwide event, put on annually by the Alzheimer's Association at numerous locations around each state all over the country. The event is the largest fundraiser in the world to raise awareness and money to help fund the fight against Alzheimer’s.
This devastating disease causes the gradual degeneration of brain cells, causing loss of memory, motor skills, and other other important mental functions. It affects over 6 million Americans, according to the association’s website, and kills more people than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined.
Visiting Angels is a nationwide sponsor of the Walk to End Alzheimer’s and hosts a team annually at the Pioneer Valley event.
