Elder Care: Fall Prevention for Bridgeport, WV Area Seniors
The #1 Reason Why Seniors Lose Their Independence: Falling
Many adults believe that falling is an unavoidable consequence of growing older. But at Visiting Angels of Bridgeport, we’re here to remind you that’s not the case.
Falls have the power to be life-threatening. Injuries such as concussions, broken hips, or fractures can be caused by a simple fall. Over 800,000 individuals are hospitalized every year due to falls. As a result, many can end up in a long-term elder care center as they care for their injuries. Some of these seniors may never go home again.
With our Safe & Steady Fall Prevention Program, we’re here to educate seniors, their caregivers, and their families about preventing falls and injuries. Preventing falls can prevent physical and mental ailments. In turn, that seniors can have an independent free life while minimizing stress.
Falls affect mental health
The fear of falling alone can drastically reduce a senior’s quality of life. They may pull themselves away from social events to prevent themselves from falling. This includes anything from family gatherings to friendly dinners. Relationships that they’ve managed over the years can begin to slip away. As this behavior becomes habitual, isolation can lead to feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and depression.
The Risk Factors of Falling
In Visiting Angels of Bridgeport’s Safe & Steady Fall Prevention elder care program, we help our clients figure out their fall risk and how to minimize it. Falls don’t “just happen”. Many factors can raise a person’s fall risk to dangerous heights.
Medical issues, physical conditions, and home environment could all affect their fall risk. Some individuals may have a mesh of factors from all three categories. Every situation is unique. For example, one person could have arthritis, poor eyesight, and a lack of grab bars in the kitchen. All these factors could relate to high fall risk. Acknowledge these factors quickly, and many falls can be prevented.
Falling is a fear that many seniors have. At Visiting Angels of Bridgeport, we’re here to remind you that you don’t have to go through that fear alone. We are educating seniors, their families, service providers, and caregivers about fall and injury prevention. Helping the Bridgeport community live comfortably and safely through elder care is our mission
