Local Hobby Resources for Seniors

Local Hobby Resources for Seniors

January is National Hobby Month. It’s the perfect time of year for seniors to explore new hobbies that will keep them engaged well into the spring season. Studies show that seniors who engage in hobbies lower their risk of dementia, report higher satisfaction in life, and increase their lifespan.

If you’re a senior who has put aside your hobbies for some time, use the New Year to restart your leisure pursuits. Here are a few local hobby resources seniors can turn to for inspiration.

Local Hobby Classes

Participating in hobby classes is a fun way for seniors to stay engaged with their favorite hobbies and meet new friends. Old World Art Glass offers stained glass for beginners and other seasonal projects. Seniors with an artistic flare may enjoy a painting class at Macy Place on the Road. Thelma Sadoff Center for the Arts hosts an open art studio-based program that aims to connect individuals with similar interests and backgrounds. Each month has a different focus so check the calendar for a class that might be suitable for you. The Knitty Gritty Shop provides an assortment of knitting classes and specific projects, including beginning knitters.

The Idea Studio

If you haven’t explored the Fond du Lac Public Library Idea Studio, you need to check it out this January. The library offers a free do-it-yourself space where anyone can create, craft, and learn. If your budget is preventing you from exploring a new hobby, then this zone is for you. The library has curated a variety of craft and hobby equipment, including a sewing machine, serger, 3-D printer, embroidery machine, printmaking press, laser cutter/engraver, and more. It’s free to use the equipment, although you may need to pay some fees for certain supplies or bring your own.

For Active Older Adults

Winter can be challenging for some active older adults to stay active. Fortunately, there are local resources to help seniors engage in their active leisure pursuits, even when it’s too cold outside. Seniors hoping to stay fit this winter can sign up for a fitness class at the Fond du Lac Family YMCA. The Aquatic Center offers water wellness classes, perfect for seniors looking for low-impact exercise programs. Seniors who prefer to exercise through sports can participate in open pickleball, also at the YMCA, which has indoor courts. Click the Community Gym link to see available dates and times.

For the Book Worms & Writers

Hobbies also include intellectual pursuits, such as reading and writing. If you’re looking to connect with fellow writers, join the Wordsmiths Writer’s Club which meets monthly at the Spillman Public Library. The Senior Center offers a monthly Memory Writers club to help guide seniors in preserving their life experiences. The Senior Center also has a monthly book club. Check the current newsletter for the book of the month and the next meeting date. Most libraries host book clubs as well, such as the Fond du Lac Public Library
