Four Ways Diabetic Seniors Living Can Improve Their Health

Four Ways Diabetic Seniors Living Can Improve Their Health

The American Diabetes Association reports that 37.3 million Americans had diabetes in 2019. Among older adults, the prevalence remains high, at 29.2 percent of the U.S. population age 65 and older. Diabetes is a serious disease that causes high blood sugar. When blood sugars remain elevated consistently, the body experiences long-term damage to the eyes, nerves, pancreas, and more.

The most common type of diabetes is type 2. It's often caused by lifestyle factors, such as excessive weight or being inactive. It generally develops over time and is diagnosed in middle to late adulthood. Type 2 diabetics are insulin resistant. Their body continues to produce insulin but doesn’t use it efficiently. Type 1 diabetes is a genetic condition that often appears early in life. Type 1 diabetics don't produce insulin and need to take insulin every day to live.

November is American Diabetes Month. If you are an older adult with diabetes, you must prioritize your health. There are ways to manage the disease to lower your risk of developing common health problems associated with diabetes. Here are four ways diabetic seniors can improve their health.

Watch What You Eat

Diabetics need to be mindful of their diet. Certain foods, such as carbohydrates and sweets, can cause blood sugar levels to spike. This causes lethargy. Diabetic seniors should watch what they eat and eat well-balanced meals to prevent blood sugar spikes. Choose whole grains made with little to no added sugar. Fill up on vegetables and fresh fruits. Include protein at each meal and snack. Choose low-fat dairy products and unsweetened drinks. Limit your sugar intake and learn to read food labels. Many processed foods have added sugar, so pick products wisely.

Follow Your Doctor’s Orders

Most older adults need prescription medication or insulin therapy to manage their diabetes. Some diabetic medication is long-acting. Other drugs target glucose production or stimulate the pancreas to secrete more insulin. Diabetic seniors must take their medications as prescribed, so their blood sugar levels remain as stable as possible. Following your doctor’s orders can significantly improve the health of a person with diabetes. If you’re confused about your medications, schedule an appointment with your doctor to review your diabetes management plan.

Exercise Daily

Another way diabetic seniors can improve their health is to include exercise in their daily routine. Type 2 diabetics often feel lethargic due to high blood sugar. Yet, people with diabetes need to move their bodies, even when they don’t feel like it. Exercise, such as walking or swimming, can help improve glucose levels in diabetic seniors. Over time, some people with diabetes find they can manage their condition with diet and exercise alone. Pick a time to exercise each day and stay as active as possible. As you exercise, your body will release endorphins that will give you a boost of energy to finish strong.
