Spring Into an Active Social Life: Why Seniors Need to Socialize and Local Places Where They Can Connect

Socializing is an important aspect of our lives, no matter our age. We have an innate need to connect with others, and those social connections play a significant role in our development. Seniors, too, need to connect and engage with others. Socializing in older adulthood helps seniors maintain a sense of purpose and belonging. It also reduces feelings of isolation and loneliness and helps seniors improve their overall emotional health and well-being.

Beyond the emotional benefits, socializing also helps seniors stay active. It provides opportunities for seniors to engage in physical activity and learn new things, which can help them keep their minds sharp and lower their risk for cognitive decline.

Studies confirm the need for seniors to socialize. One study found that older adults with higher levels of social engagement had lower mortality risk. The study also found that social engagement was associated with better physical function and mental well-being. Another study examined the correlation between social isolation and cognitive decline. The results suggest that social isolation is associated with increased memory decline rather than poor memory leading to social isolation. A third study found that social isolation is a major risk factor for depression and anxiety in seniors. The study found thatseniors who participated in social activities lowered their risk of depression and anxiety.

It’s evident that socializing is important to maintaining a healthy and fulfilling lifestyle as a senior. If you’re a senior who has neglected your social connections in recent months or years, use the start of the spring season to spring into an active social life. Here are a few local places where you can find social connections within the community.

Oshkosh Seniors Center

The Oshkosh Seniors Center offers a wide range of activities, including fitness and wellness classes, engagement and art enrichment, and more. Seniors can drop in with their own devices and utilize the center’s free WiFi to stay connected with others through technology. Check out their monthly program newsletter for more information.

Local YMCAs

Most people associate the YMCA with youth programs and fitness. However, many YMCAs provide specialized programming for seniors, making them a great place for seniors to socialize and connect. Both 20th Ave Oshkosh YMCA and Downtown YMCA offer lifelong learning opportunities for seniors and host a monthly Memory Cafe for seniors with memory loss. Both locations also offer education and support to individuals with Parkinson’s disease and Veterans.

Libraries

Libraries, such as the Oshkosh Public Library or the Winneconne Public Library, are another place where seniors connect and meet new friends. Most libraries offer book clubs for all readers and host other educational programs where seniors can connect and socialize. Browse your preferred library’s website to see what events appeal to you.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteering not only provides purpose and direction for many retired seniors, but it also connects them with others who share similar interests. Seniors who volunteer have opportunities to build friendships and companionship with other volunteers and/or with the people the specific organization serves. Older adults aged 55 and above can start their volunteer journey at the Wisconsin Department of Health Services
