HOW TO GET STARTED

I’m Marcy Silver, Operations Coordinator of award-winning Visiting Angels of Pikesville. We solve one of the most difficult challenges facing families today…caring for loved ones requiring in-home companion or personal care. We serve Baltimore County, including Pikesville, Owings Mills, Reisterstown, Glyndon and Mt. Washington, Baltimore City, including Hampden, and Carroll County, including Finksburg, providing companion care and personal care to primarily seniors who need assistance in order to age in place.

So, how do you get started?
a) Our Residential Services Agency license requires an initial meeting where the family and/or client meet with a Visiting Angels care coordinator. This meeting includes a detailed review of care needed, schedule request (if known), specific requests of family or client, and any other concerns. This is an excellent opportunity to ask questions of Visiting Angels and it is an excellent opportunity for us to get to know you as well. If you are feeling overwhelmed, we can make recommendations, as we have lots of experience in understanding what works in certain situations.

b) The following topics are commonly discussed during initial meetings:
  1. Specific physical needs of the care recipient with regards to bathing and grooming, dressing, meals and diet, mobility, and incontinence.
  2. Reviewing schedules involving sleep, eating and medication.
  3. Specific emotional needs such as social interaction, activities, conversation, appointments, and companionship.
  4. Specific assistance with homemaking such as preparation of meals, groceries, linens, laundry, and light housekeeping.
  5. Logistics of schedules, access to the home, documentation, and the details of how to work with scheduling changes, the office or the caregivers.
  6. Once we determine the specific needs, we create a customized care plan
  7. Upon completing the plan of care we then refer an appropriate caregiver, taking the client’s needs and personality into consideration. Next we set up a meeting with the client prior to care beginning for an introduction to the assigned caregiver. This serves as an ice breaker, so the caregiver is not a complete stranger on the first day of care. It also provides an opportunity to review the care details, which helps the first day of care run more smoothly.
  8. What makes us different from other agencies is that we assign a specific caregiver to each client. We believe it is important to provide consistency and continuity of care. In the event that your caregiver calls out sick, we make every reasonable effort to assign an appropriate substitute caregiver.
  9. As required by our license, our Registered Nurse will meet with the client and/or the family to complete a detailed medical history. Our RN will return every 90 days to note any changes and to update the care plan as needed.
