Oral Health Tips for Older Adults

Oral Health Tips for Older Adults

As we age, our teeth begin to lose strength due to years of food and drink consumption. Additionally, certain medical issues, such as loss of eyesight or poor mobility can make taking care of our teeth more of a challenge. This could result in gum disease, root decay, and even tooth loss.

Ways for Seniors to Care for Their Teeth

Following an oral health routine is essential for seniors to maintain tooth health, as well as prevent conditions that gum inflammation can cause. Research shows that gingivitis raises your risk of contracting heart disease, lung disease, stroke, and other complications. Fortunately, these consequences aren’t inevitable. Here are some steps you can take today to start protecting your teeth and overall health.

Visit the Dentist Regularly

Be sure to schedule two appointments a year with your dentist. At your cleaning and checkup, your dental team can assess any issues you may be experiencing, and come up with a customized treatment plan.

Use an Electric Toothbrush

An electric toothbrush can make cleaning your teeth at home easier since it doesn’t require strenuous hand and arm movements. Some varieties offer extra features, such as a pressure sensor that alerts the user when they’re brushing too hard. Pair your electric toothbrush with a high-quality toothpaste that contains fluoride.

Floss Every Day

It’s important to floss daily, especially after meals. If you struggle with hand dexterity, floss picks or other dental tools can be helpful, and work well for seniors with crowns and bridges. Water flossers are also an excellent way to gently clean between your teeth and under your gums. They take a little practice to get used to, but once you do, the process is fast and simple.

Increase Your Calcium Intake

Calcium is crucial for keeping our teeth in tip top shape. However, many seniors don’t get enough of the mineral in their diet. Adults should consume around 1,000-1,200 milligrams of calcium per day, either through their diet or supplements. Try to include more calcium-rich foods in your meals, such as dairy products, almonds, beans, and green, leafy vegetables.

Stay Hydrated

If you take medications, you may experience dry mouth as a side effect. Since our saliva helps to protect our teeth from decay, it’s important to stay hydrated. Chat with your doctor or dentist about ways to combat dry mouth, and increase your water intake.

Take Care of Your Dentures

If you use dentures as part of your oral health routine, be sure to follow your dentist’s instructions on how to care for them. Contact your dentist right away if you experience any pain or discomfort from your dentures.
