Discovering Maryland's Waterfront Charm: Day Trips for Seniors

With the prevalence of isolation and depression in the elderly, it’s critical for aging loved ones and their families to stay connected with the local community. Don’t underestimate the impact grandchildren can have in senior care, especially when planning trips and making new memories. If you’re looking for ideas for your next day trip, here are a few Maryland destinations you can’t miss.

Amazing Day Trips for Seniors Along Maryland’s Waterfront

Companionship and compassion are only a few qualities of a Visiting Angels caregiver. At Visiting Angels of Pikesville/Owings Mills, we pride ourselves on exploring everything Maryland has to offer with our clients, offering support and care at every step. Here are a few of our favorite locations in Maryland.

Maryland Science Center

Grandkids and seniors delight in the celebration of science that can be found at the Maryland Science Center. While the center offers field trips for local schools, you can also enjoy various exhibits throughout the year. Current exhibits include Dinosaur Mysteries, Kids Room, Life Beyond Earth, SpaceLink, Newton’s Alley, Power Up, Science Aglow, and The Shed.

National Aquarium

Located in the heart of Baltimore, the National Aquarium gives visitors a one-of-a-kind view beneath the water’s surface. Opened in 1981, the National Aquarium hosts five stunning levels to explore. Animals on display include dolphins, jellyfish, snakes, crocodiles, birds, and more. Check out the Living Seashore and Blacktip Reef while you’re there.

Fort McHenry

Birthplace of the national anthem and a formidable defense position throughout history up until World War II, Fort McHenry stands as one of the more popular historical attractions in Maryland. Fort McHenry was built in 1798 and became well-known for its role in the Battle of Baltimore in 1814. Today, you can take guided tours of Fort McHenry and enjoy live music and historic weapons demonstrations.

Fells Point

Vitamin D is important for seniors, and what better place to soak up the sun’s rays than Fells Point? This historic neighborhood, situated on Baltimore’s premier waterfront, was established in 1763 and continues to delight locals and tourists. Fells Point represents a melting pot of cultures and historic architecture, from the Robert Long House to the famous Broadway Market and The Horse You Came In On Saloon. Yearly events include the Fells Point Fun Festival, the Privateer Festival, and the Fells Point Farmers Market, but there are plenty of restaurants and shops to frequent year-round.

American Visionary Art Museum

The American Visionary Art Museum’s (AVAM) reach extends well beyond Maryland’s waterfront to invite museum-goers to a new kind of experience. Founder Rebecca Hoffberger’s legacy includes unique art from self-taught artists, rich in thought-provoking elements and inspiration. AVAM is the center of many local events and celebrations and continues to showcase visionary art in a family-friendly, open-arms setting perfect for seniors to socialize and connect with fellow museum-goers of all ages.
