What comes to mind when you hear the word “hospice”? Are you among the majority of Americans who believe that hospice is only for those with days left to live? Join us as we welcome Dr. Andrew Mayo, a native of Minnesota. He was inspired to pursue a career in medicine by his family’s long history of dedication to community healthcare and innovation. He currently serves as Chief Medical Officer for St. Croix Hospice. Dr. Mayo addresses the challenges and misconceptions that many hospice organizations face today, such as hospice means you are giving up on life. He shares the many benefits a patient and their family can expect to receive from hospice, including the holistic approach hospice provides to care for the whole person. He also shares insight on signs and symptoms to look for that may indicate a patient is appropriate for hospice care and how to begin that conversation. His personal experience with hospice and the help it can provide only solidified his belief that the philosophy of hospice is one that we all should be focusing on: living the best we can with the time we have remaining.
