3 Spring-Inspired DIY Craft Ideas for Seniors

3 Spring-Inspired DIY Craft Ideas for Seniors

Springtime is all about renewal, beautiful blooms, and warmer weather. But flowers aren’t the only things sprouting this season! Spring is the perfect time for seniors to nurture their creativity with fun, do-it-yourself (DIY) crafts.

Arts and crafts can help seniors improve their cognition, mood, and fine motor skills. Attending a crafting class also lets older adults socialize and meet new people.

Get Crafty This Spring

Ready to get crafty this spring? Here are three fun spring-inspired DIY craft ideas for seniors to try.

1. Make a Flower Shadow Box

Do you love nature? Bring the beauty of the outdoors inside with a DIY flower shadow box. Head to your local park, such as Hufnagle or Soldier’s Park, to pick some wildflowers. Fresh air and sunshine do the body good. You can also buy flowers at a nursery or home improvement store. You can get a shadow box at a big-box craft store.

Hang the flowers upside down to dry them out. Then, press them between the pages of a sturdy book before arranging them in your shadow box.

Want to skip the flower-pressing stage? Opt for faux ferns or blooms.

Not a fan of shadow boxes? Try making a flower basket or DIY dry bouquet. Both add a touch of spring to your space.

2. Spring Wreaths

Add some springtime beauty to your front door with a DIY spring wreath. You’ll need a wreath frame, wire wheel, foliage, water tubes, ribbon, and a bowl of water. You can purchase most of these supplies from your local arts and crafts store.

Seasonal wreaths can also be used for the holidays. Add some plastic eggs, chicks, bunnies, or other decor to get your entryway ready for spring! This is a great project to do with friends, family, or your grandkids.

3. Stamped Egg Place Cards

Are you planning on hosting any spring gatherings this year? DIY egg place cards are a cute way to let your guests know where to sit. Nestle the eggs in a bowl of faux twigs or grass to create an adorable springtime nest. After your feast, your grandkids, and other guests, can take their egg place cards home with them.

For this project, you’ll need to hard-boil your eggs and carefully hand-stamp them with ink. That was easy!
