6 Tips to Prepare Your Home for Warmer Weather

Spring has sprung! While this means warmer weather and beautiful blooms, springtime requires seniors to prep their homes for the seasonal changes. Are your gutters, HVAC system, and all other house components springtime-ready?

Springtime Home Preparation for Seniors

Keep reading to learn six tips and tricks seniors can use to prepare their homes for spring. While some tasks may require assistance, there are ways for seniors to actively participate in the preparation process, whether it’s overseeing the work, making arrangements for help, or contributing in smaller ways. By taking these steps, seniors can maintain a sense of independence and control over their living environment while promoting their well-being and safety during the spring season.

1. Degunk Your Gutters

Dead leaves, sticks, and other debris can get trapped in your gutters during the fall and winter. If your gutters are clogged, it can lead to water buildup and roof leaks.

Seniors shouldn’t attempt to clean their gutters on their own. Contact your local handyman or a roofing company to get your gutters spick and span.

2. Prep Your Patio and Deck

Warmer weather means you’ll spend more time outdoors soaking up the sun. Ensure your outdoor spaces are ready for all the action. Check your patio and deck to see if they sustained any damage from snow and ice, including cracks, loose boards, and dislodged stones. Freezing temperatures can take a toll on masonry. Making any necessary repairs will keep you and your guests safe.

3. Check Your Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

It can be easy to forget to check the batteries of your carbon monoxide and smoke alarms. A change in the seasons is the perfect opportunity to ensure all of your alarms are working up to speed. Get into the habit of checking the batteries every three months. Ask a relative, friend, or neighbor to lend a hand so you aren’t climbing ladders around the house.

4. Tune Up the HVAC

To beat the heat, your HVAC system must be working efficiently. Call a professional HVAC company and have their technicians come out to inspect and service your system. If your HVAC system needs a tune-up, it will probably cost you no more than $150. Preventative maintenance will also prevent costly repairs, saving you more money in the long run.

5. Declutter Your Attic, Garage, and Basement

Don’t forget to tackle your basement, attic, and garage! These areas can quickly fill up with useless junk. Ask your friends, children, or even grandkids to spend an afternoon helping you declutter. Toss unusable items. You can either sell or donate items that are still in good shape, like gently used clothing, home décor accessories, toys, and tools.

6. Watch Your Garden Grow

Love gardening? Make sure you program your sprinkler system to keep your lawn well-watered. Stock up on all the supplies you need to plant an outdoor garden, including seeds, fertilizer, gloves, and gardening tools. Gardening is a great way for seniors to get some physical exercise and fresh air.
