Health Care Services Talk about Cholesterol. Do you Know About Cholesterol Levels?

High cholesterol is not a laughing matter. In fact, health care services suggest that your mom or dad learn the facts about high cholesterol and begin controlling theirs today.

Did you know high cholesterol may not have initial outward symptoms? It is not until mom or dad has a blood test the doctor will not be able to diagnose if they have this medical condition. If they do they could be at risk for a stroke, cardiac arrest, diabetes, or sudden death.

Health care services suggest that not only should your parent be aware of the causes of this disease but you and your other family members should be educated as well. Cholesterol flows through the blood attached to proteins. Proteins plus cholesterol is called lipoprotein. There are two kinds of lipoprotein. The low-density is considered the bad cholesterol. If too much of this builds up on the walls of the arteries it creates plaque and blood flow which can lead to stroke, cardiac arrest, and other diseases. However, the high-density is identified as the good cholesterol because this picks up excess cholesterol, not allowing it to build up plaque, takes it to the liver and disposes it through the liver.

Your mother or father can reduce their high cholesterol risk with a low saturated fat diet and increase activity or exercise. A diet high in saturated fats, such as animal products, will put your parent at a higher risk. This includes high trans-fats which tend to increase cholesterol levels. Health care services suggest that activities like walking, dancing, and swimming are excellent ways to help your loved one to remain healthy.

If high cholesterol is a hereditary factor, your mother or father’s medical team may want to help them with medication to maintain normal blood levels.
