When your parent no longer is able to care for their beloved pet, a home care provider often helps soften the loss

Although pets are considered to be an excellent resource of companionship for your elderly parent, too often there comes a time when despite the loving bond between the animal and your mom or dad, they must part ways. Not only did their dog or cat provide companionship, and maybe service as well, your mother or father had a purpose each day to care for their little rover or kitty. However, the home care provider may note that your parent is not as able to respond to the needs of their pet, and this is not fair to their furry friend nor themselves. The care provider must have your parent’s best interest in focus at all times.

It’s possible that rover is clawing at the door many times during the day and night, and your mother or father is not able to take the dog out for a walk. In many communities’ owners are required to clean-up after their animals, and this may be difficult for your parent, even with the help of a tool. If they have a cat changing the litter and cleaning up after kitty may also be a chore, as well feeding their little feline. When their animal companion becomes more work, the home care provider may recommend it is time for Rover and Kitty to find a new home. This is not an easy discussion for the home care provider and yet this individual must be focused on your parent’s care.
Although the home care provider may realize that mom or dad’s pet has been a necessary companion in their life, if your parent cannot take proper care of the animal and the animal’s care distracts the home care provider from efficiently assisting your mother or father, it may be best to say good-bye. Most caregivers will do what they can to accommodate your parent’s needs, but remember that it is your parent who needs care, not the pet.
