Personal home care makes it possible for seniors to maintain their independence and age in place in the comforts of home instead of moving to an assisted-living facility — even if they have a physical disability or chronic health condition.
If your senior worries about losing their independence or struggles with everyday tasks, a Visiting Angels dedicated personal care assistant can help provide the essential in-home support your loved one needs.
What Is Personal Care?
Personal care is a non-medical home care service that helps older adults who require assistance with day-to-day activities such as:
- Personal grooming
- Mobility and transfers
Personal caregivers can offer a helping hand with other tasks, including:
- Meal preparation
- Light housekeeping
- Medication reminders
- Other routine activities
Personal care—also known as “private duty care” or “private care”— typically includes a combination of tasks and activities to ensure your senior’s optimal safety, comfort, and well-being.
Services can also support individuals with chronic health conditions or physical disabilities who need personal home care assistance.
Personal Care vs. Companion Care
The two most common in-home care services–personal care and companion care—have some similarities but differ. Both are non-medical services that provide much-needed companionship and emotional support. The main distinction is assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and other tasks that require direct physical help.
Personal caregivers have specific skills and abilities to provide direct physical assistance while also performing other duties.
Companion caregivers can assist with errands or light housekeeping, but they cannot help with ADLs or perform tasks that require physical assistance.
Visiting Angels recommends personal services if your loved one requires direct physical assistance or has a chronic health condition such as deficits after a stroke or dementia. Visiting Angels may recommend companion services if your loved one does not need this level of assistance.
