Living in Brillion

Located 30 minutes south of Green Bay, Wisconsin, sits Brillion, a small city in Calumet County surrounded by nature. It’s a beautiful place for seniors to explore, alone or with their families, and there are plenty of activities to take advantage of all year round.

Brillion Nature Center

The Brillion Nature Center is a non-profit environmental education center in the Brillion Wildlife Area. The center provides educational opportunities and events to the general public, some geared toward community seniors.

One such program is the Older and Wiser, Learning for Seniors (OWLS), a monthly program for older adults to learn about nature and enjoy the outdoors. Each program session includes a presentation, hands-on indoor activity, an outdoor demonstration, and a discussion group with light snacks. Seniors don’t need to be members of the Brillion Nature Center to join in on the fun, but pre-registration is required, and members receive a $2 discount.

If you’re not one for scheduled programs or the topics aren’t interesting, you can always visit the Brillion Nature Center and enjoy the nearby trails open daily from dusk to dawn. You can also rent a field pack for $5 with a field identification guide and other tools to educate yourself on native Brillion bugs and plants.

Brillion Wildlife Area

There’s no better way to enjoy a quiet moment in nature than at the Brillion Wildlife Area. The area is 4,800 acres of prairie, marsh, and wetlands, making it a go-to fishing destination for Wisonsinates. Grab your favorite pole, pack a healthy lunch, and pack your tackle box for a relaxing morning or afternoon near the water.

If you’re new to Wisconsin or haven’t been fishing before, ensure you have a fishing license and know the regulations before your outing.

Brillion Library

If you like getting lost in a good book, visit the Brillion Library, which has a collection of more than 30,000 items to borrow.

If you enjoy interacting with others who enjoy a good book, you may want to consider joining a book club at the Brillion Library. They have four book clubs to choose from, held monthly at different times and days, so you can find something that fits your schedule. The best part about joining a book club at the library is all the book club choices are available for checkout.

Local Food

You can’t go wrong with local food from one of Brillion’s superior dining options for the senior foodie who enjoys catching up with friends over a tasty meal.

One popular option is Cobblestone Creek, located at 740 West Ryan Street. They have an extensive lunch menu with salads, pasta, wraps, sandwiches, and burgers. Stop by on a Friday for the Friday Fish Fry with your choice of perch, haddock, or shrimp. All seafood options come with fries, cole slaw, and rye bread.

Also located on West Ryan Street is Rudy’s Cafe. Customers rave about their quick service and affordable prices for filling and delicious meals. If you’re feeling adventurous when you stop in, try their famous bacon cheeseburger omelet or one of their magnificent pies.
