What Home Care Agencies Look for When Hiring a Professional Caregiver

Have you been searching for a new caregiver job? Whether you are looking to change career paths or hoping to continue working as a professional caregiver for a new organization, you can find a flexible and enjoyable job as a caregiver for Visiting Angels Newton/Canton!

What are the job requirements of a professional caregiver?

To work at a reputable home care agency, caregivers must have the following requirements:

  1. You should have some experience as a caregiver. This can include experience caring for your own loved one or experience as a professional home caregiver.
  2. You need to either be certified as a Home Health Aide (HHA) or a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA); however, some agencies will accept those who desire to learn the role of a caregiver and have a true passion for assisting the older adults and disabled adults.
  3. You will need to pass a background check. Since older people are more vulnerable, they can be taken advantage of more easily. Agencies will want to verify that there is nothing suspicious in a candidate’s background before they move forward with hiring them.
  4. You need to be healthy and provide a current TB test. Older people can catch sicknesses more easily, so agencies want to ensure that they hire healthy caregivers to care for older people.
  5. You must be reliable and always show up to work on time. The agency may require you to either have a car or access reliable public transportation. Your job may require you to run errands, so you may need to drive and have a car.
  6. You should be compassionate and treat elders with respect, patience and kindness. Some caregivers help their clients bathe, dress, and perform other personal care services. It is essential that you perform these tasks respectfully. Home caregivers provide companionship for elders who live alone, so it would be a plus if you are conversational and enjoy older adults’ company.
  7. You should be open and willing to learn new skills. Most agencies will provide training programs and opportunities to help further their staff’s ability and skill set.

If the qualifications above describe you, the best home care agencies will want to hire you! Additionally, suppose you work hard and are a great fit for the role. In that case, you may even be able to ask the agency you are working for to accommodate your needs, such as a flexible work schedule, working part-time, bonus opportunities, and paid online training courses.
